I'm a volt miser and probably would be considered a cheapskate with the rest of my purchases, also. :B For the combiner box to controller run (about 8' in my case), I used 4 AWG. Since I knew I would have use for more 4 AWG connecting batteries and 12v distribution, I bought a 100' roll. I went with welding cable for the flexibility. Price has gone up a bit since I purchased but it is still available at my local distributor for $1.35 a foot.
