I like the idea of the marine flat cable. I went with 35 feet (70 ft RT)of #4 sunlight resistant welding lead. Kind of bulky but very flexable and easy to work with.
I didn't use a combiner box. I simply paralleled my panels with a aluminum coupling form elect. supply. I got a couple of them that allowed two #10's form panels in one side and the #4 in the other side. Wires are held by set screws so very easy to disconnect. I then covered with heatshrink.
If you are thinking #8, you will never be sorry if you spend a few dollars more for #6, but then copper was less when I did mine. See my sig for solar specs.
