You need the serial interface for firmware updates, no way to avoid this. I installed a 1' serial to USB cable which can also be used by the other software. I add a 15' USB extension cable for the firmware updates.
But I use a crossover LAN direct connect to the laptop which is routed into the living area for the software. The router for WiFi which I tested but don't really use requires a second crossover. LAN cable is cheap and can be as long as desired.
