Using the converter without the diode is like driving without seat belts on. How lucky do you feel? You'll probably see smoke if the sense wire opens and the diode isn't there.
This mod compensates for the positive cable voltage drop between the converter and battery. The converter may have a resistance of 8 mohm and your cable may have 10 mohm, for a total of 18 mohm. At 45A, you'll get a voltage drop of:
IR_drop = 18 mohm * 45A = 0.81V
In order to get 13.8V at the battery, you need 14.61V at the converter. It's been a long time since I've done this mod, but I think the diode will only raise the voltage 0.5V, however you really need 0.81V. You could try putting two diodes in series.
