Parallel then series, or the other way around?

I bought four 6V AGMs. Evidently I'll be doing parallel + series to get to 12V, but I'm wondering if it makes any practical difference whether I wire each pair in series (to get a pair of 12V batterie...

Series parallel is the way to get 12v from 6v batteries,....has nothing to do w/ balance, or getting double AHs

Balance???? If you believe in it, do it. IMO if batt terminals are kept clean, there will be no measureable difference where you connect the load cables.
