If by "dumb" generators you mean traditional synchronous generators (without inverters), it most definitely does not work to parallel them without careful synchronization first so they are in phase. The generator head works very nicely as a motor, and if they're out of phase they fight each other heartily until one or both are forced into submission. If the voltage regulators aren't matched (with regard to voltage drop under load etc.), they also won't share power well at all.
DC generators are different, though power sharing still may not be ideal.
