We have the Dish pay as you go plan, and like it quite well. However, we have been going and going, and haven't tried to stop our service (probably won't in the foreseeable future).
There is no monthly charge for using an external hard drive on the 211z receiver. There was a one time fee to activate it, though.
When we move to a new area, I call Dish to have them change our service address. The customer service reps are very helpful, and the switch usually only takes about 10 minutes or less before we have the local channels for the area we are in.
I use our rooftop mounted Winegard Roadtrip Mission satellite dish when possible. If we are parked under a signal eating tree, we have a Winegard Pathway X2 that works great. Although the literature on the X2 says you can only have 75' of cable, I have used it with 150' with no problems.
