I have the VIP 211k receiver. I don't believe this receiver is available today. Maybe a Wally can work for you. Anyway, the 211k has a USB port for an external drive. I paid a one-time fee of $40 to activate the DVR feature to record onto the drive. Someone mentioned a monthly fee, but I only paid once to activate.

I only use the service when traveling or on a local camp-out with our local Good Sams Chapter. We camped 6 days last month. On the first day, we called and re-connected our account. On our return, we called and dis-connected. Why?

That gave us a credit balance of ~$50. We use the $75 plan, but we do not always pay $75! We paid about $25 because we dis-connected after our prior camp-out. When we disconnect, we keep a prorated credit balance if we have not used up a full month. The next time we re-connect, we will have about $50 credit again and will pay ~$25 to re-connect.

It gets better. When we are at home, we can watch our recorded shows for free. We power up the receiver without connecting to the Tailgater and still have access to the DVR function.

It all depends on what you read. :)
