Hi Land,
There were exposed the plates. The part of the plate that exposed never ever recovers, so the battery looses capacity.
The recharge protocol included hammering away with an alternator. That is going to "cost" positive plate erosion, so the battery looses capacity.
I think I'd try a lifeline @ 14.4 volts. One for the house and one for the starter. An 8D for the "house" if it will fit.
