permatex on the dust seal?

after reviewing bearing maintenance procedures after a bearing failure last week, i watched the below video, which says to use permatex red on the outside of the dust seal. How many people actually do this? i have never seen it mentioned before, so i did 1 side just to see if there is any difference in a couple thousand miles

around 5:10 into the video it talks about it

  • I’ve replaced dust seals for well over 40 years.. nothing is needed nor would Inrecommend it.. if the proper seal is installed and not damaged during install permetex is a c9mplete waste
  • My thoughts are that what he did when he coated the outside of the inner grease seal will not hurt anything.

however I thought the green coating on the grease seal was supposed to provide the seal. :h

I thought he really slopped that stuff on there.

I am referring to what the tech did at about the 5:10 interval.
  • Nope. Most of them seem to have the rubber coating along the edge, which the vid says should not be coated with permatex.
  • The video shows a grease seal, not the outboard dust cap. I've always thought the material on the outside of the seal's case affords a grabbing "seal" to where it's installed in the hub. So no, I've never used RTV or any other sealant on a grease seal.
  • Yes, some mechanics do so but unless it's subjected to being immersed in water or the cap is damaged to the point it will let dirt in, I've never seen any use for it.
