I don't know if you can repair the rubber roof the way you described, and I don't know the correct way to actually do that. However, I did coat my rubber roof with Plas-T=Cote Rubber Roof Coating some 10 years ago as a preventive measure and I think it helped reduce ageing and prolong the life of my roof. My coach is now 20 years old and the roof has never leaked and I've never had a problem.
