I used one of these SEARS DIGITAL AC/DC CLAMP ON AMPMETERS ($60) for a long time. Think mine read up to 400AMPs.. Haven't seen it in my tool box for a couple of years now.
Worked great for measuring both 120VAC AC AMPS as well as 12VDC DC AMPS.
Be sure to read the specs and get the one for DC CURRENT measurements. The AC AMP version is the most popular one...
