Volt meter or multimeter recommendation please

I am told I should have a volt meter or multimeter in my Class A gas RV tool chest but I have no idea what type or style. I don't even know the difference between a voltmeter and multimeter! I searched "voltmeter" on eBay and came up with 23,476 choices. I would appreciate any education or recommendations please....thanks.

I have multiple multi-meters here (Well Electronics is my hobby and I have some wallpaper (School certificate) in the field) ONE of them is a Crafstman (Sears) 82-369 This is a clamp on AC/DC ammeter, volt meter, Frequency meter, Bunch of other meters (Resistance too) and THERMOMETER (remote reading)

The DC ammeter function has identified two bad batteries by noting differences in current flow.. THIS was without having to disconnect them, Once disconnected a volt meter confirmed shorted cell (Actually I used a different volt meter for that since that one is part of an "Offline battery tester".

Tonight the temps are getting into the "Scary cold" range (For an RVer that is less than 20 degrees) For the first time since I started parking here,, Now being from Michigan I made some mods which extend the "Scary" temp down to 10, but ... Well the screen in front of me is improving, it's up to 9 as the expected low tonight.

I'm not sure I have enough heat in the basement without running the furnace and burning expensive propane instead of included in the site rental electricity.

I dropped the sensor in beside the GRAY tank, and will monitor the temps in the wet bay from the comfort of the hall closet above it using that meter, if it gets too low.. I'll start killing off (Shutting off) Electric heaters inside (Leaving the lights and heaters in the bay on) and fire up the furnace to blow heated air down there as well.

A very handy meter. Even helped me fix a Christmas decoration this morning.
  • The Harbor freight $5.00 meter will be just fine to check for 12 Volts DC or 120 Volts AC or continuity. If you watch they often have a coupon for a free one. I have 3 or 4 of those as well as a couple of $400.00 Flukes. :)
  • I agree with above. You do not need an expensive meter for the RV. I have several but use a Harbor Freight meter in the RV I got free with a coupon.
More important is knowing how to use it. Electricity can be dangerous, even more so if you do not know what you are doing.
  • Like jimbollman posted buy the cheapie Harbor Freight meter. Once you get experience using it then buy a more expensive one. It isn't the price of the meter it is the experience of the guy holding the probes. I think the Harbor Freight one is $6. Not a big loss if you damage it learning. These are all digital. Not like it is the difference between 20,000 ohm per volt or 1 meg ohm per volt in an analog meter when you spend that $6 on the digital.
  • If you don't know why you need it or how to use it, pickup a multimeter from Harbor Freight for under $10. Then when someone is helping you and ask if you have one hand it to them to show you how to use it.

Only partly kidding, for most RV uses you don't need an expensive meter to do the job. If you have never used one before you can burn them out if used wrong and it is better to burn out a cheap one.

I have several good ones scattered around the shop but keep a cheap one in the RV for that once every few years I need one.
  • I'm using a "Southwire 21050T". It is also a clamp on 12V or 120V meter that is professional quality. Check EBAY for the best price, but it is available at Lowes.
  • A mutlimeter is set up to have different functions. It can measure AC voltage, DC voltage and resistance(continuity)
A voltmeter measures only the voltage that the unit is designed for such as AC or DC. It will not measure resistance.
This one from Harbor Freight works good.
    Multimeter
This one from Walmart works about the same.
