50+ years ago when we bought our first washer and dryer the appliance company installed a 240 plug for the dryer in the basement but ran an extension cord for the 110 for the washer to the ceiling light. I asked my father-in-law, who was the electrical supervisor for the power company, if I could wire a 110 outlet off of the 240 box. I wired it the way I thought he told me to but when I plugged the washer in it ran like hell for about 10 seconds. Fortunately the 240 only burned out a solenoid in the washer. My point is you may have varying types of damage depending on the appliance. I would think the electrician's insurer, if the step up as they should, will send an adjuster to test and determine the total damage. Of course you should do your own testing to have an idea what is working and what is not working. Best of luck.
