That is because they have computerized the electric blankets. If you could find an ancient one that is controlled with a bimetallic strip it would work fine on MSW.

my GE 1100 cooking watts 4yrs old
generator or shore 1 minute to heat a cup of coffee
using my trip-lite inverter 2 minutes, 90 seconds will do it, but 2 minutes makes it extra hot

just how OLD is that Amana MW, magnetron tubes do get weaker

I got a feeling that Mex was mostly annoyed with longer waiting time for that coffee, not AH.

It is interesting that MSW can't do electric blanket, while doing other resistive loads nicely.

Yes, but twice as long does not mean twice as many AH. The MW that pulls 150 amps on PSW will only pull 110 amps (approx, based on mine) on MSW.

So let's say we are doing a spud that takes 7 minutes on PSW but is "good enough" after 9 minutes on MSW (actuals on mine-- not theoretical)

7/60 x 150 = 17.5AH

9/60 x 110 = 16.5AH

So it is easier on the battery bank to cook that spud on MSW than it would be on PSW.

Purchased 1000W inverter, MW doesn't run on it - yes, you've been told that it wouldn't, why bother asking and then buying it :)

And, what "converter" are you talking about now? Unless this has changed, you are parked where there is no shore power. Converter is for shore power. Are you trying to feed the converter from inverter?

Many MW brands do run ok on MSW though. My Sharp and Danby's do just fine on MSW but of course they cook faster with PSW.

It is hard to compare times for re-heating food as opposed to a real number like for boiling water. "Hot enough to eat" is a wide range, so if you usually get it too hot then "just right" can be fewer minutes. Stick a knife in a spud to see if it is soft enough. How soft is soft in minutes? And it gets softer after you finish with the MWing anyway. So in real life it isn't much longer with MSW for most things.

Unlike Mex, I don't use the MW for coffee water heating. I use an electric kettle which works the same on MSW as PSW.

I had a PSW inverter for a while (RIP :( ) but it turns out nothing we own needs it, so MSW is fine for us.

I did get a little gizmo that plays records and tapes to record on your computer so you can make CDs, and it turned out the record player ran too slow on the MSW so everything sounded funny. Must be like the problem with electric clocks I guess. That was the only "issue" that showed up.

Mex, are lucky that your microwave works at all - on MSW. Many models don't.

On my Trace FOUR THOUSAND WATT CONTINUOUS ten thousand watt intermittent inverter. connected to SEVERAL TONS of industrial batteries, a one thousand watt premium brand (Amana) microwave becomes for all intents and purposes A SIX HUNDRED WATT microwave.

Four minutes to heat 2 cups of coffee on shore power and EIGHT MINUTES to heat the coffee on MODIFIED SINE WAVE power. Verified with a thermometer.

So is the verification that the magnetron in the microwave runs significantly hotter on modified sine wave.

Amazing what a person discovers using instruments.

I wouldn't buy another modified sine wave inverter and I sure as heck would not try and juggle wattage with an MSW. Pure sine wave is more expensive, but those three minutes every morning are torture. Pure Wasted Energy. There were no pure sine wave inverters when I purchased the Trace. I must have played the part of "one of the original fools" when I coupled a modified sine wave to a Biddeford electric blanket (in Quicksilver). Piff. A tiny curl of smoke. Thirty years later, I remain wiser.

I outlined the microwave efficiency/comparison test here on this forum several years ago. I just cannot afford cheaper modified sine wave inverters.
