PLEASE NOTE: the pm3 units being sold by adventurerv may very well be the newer version, with the 15 minute boost mode. What this means is, it will go into boost for 15 minutes... regardless of battery SOC. That means it will go into boost, even if the batteries are near full. The voltage will spike, and amps will start out high, then quickly drop.

If considering modifying one of the newer pm3's, consider this:

There is a difference of about 1v, between the factory preset boost and abs voltages. So, if you have the pot set to a new modified setting, at say 14.8 Vabs, and the batteries are more than say 80% soc, the voltage will quickly rise to 15.8v for 15 minutes, before dropping down to 14.8Vabs, and the current will start out at a rather high rate, as well. However, on a deeply discharged battery, the unit will still go into boost for 15 minutes, but the voltage will start out low, and rise to the Vabs setting as usual, and the current will likewise max out at its current limit, as usual.

ALSO; There was a thermistor issue on the earlier versions... no idea which ones... only that the pm4b-60 I bought spring of 2013 still had the issue, and blew up on its second run. Apparently a larger thermistor is being installed in the new bpcm-75, built and sold by bestconverter.com. As for all other versions and models, I cannot say.

  • The adventure rv site is confused it seems. They list the PM3-100 at $10 less than boatand rv does,(no idea of shipping from each, which affects total price) but then show another "PM3-100" for way more, but give its specs as though it is a PM4.

Boatandrv PM3-100 says it is 1620w (correct) while the (wrong) PM spec for the PM4s is 1440w. (to be corrected AFAIK) also boatandrv says their PM3 has that equalization stage in Float which is the fourth "stage" that makes a PM3 into a PM4-confused yet? :(

PM4 has the added feature starting in boost no matter what the battery SOC is and runs for 15 minutes, then decides whether to stay in boost or drop to 13.6 depending on the battery SOC by then. Meanwhile the actual PM3s start like WFCOs, only doing boost if they see under 13.2v at kick off. (which means battery SOC usually just under 50%)

IMO if you want a PM4, deal with Randy and get the three-year warranty etc. If you want the PM3 to modify, get one but consider it risk money in case you mess it up once the lid is off and you start twiddling the pot. Also know the thermistor "issue" --avoid hot restarts and connect to battery before plugging in the charger.

My PM3-100 as modified works really well but the OP is right--I could have wrecked it.
  • Yes Roy, just like BFL and I did. It will render it a 2 stage charger, rather than a converter with a 3 stage charging feature with low factory preset limits. They can be easily adjusted for temp compensation 6 or 7 times a year.

...no longer useful as a converter

    ... no more warranty

    ... not for the timid

What settings are you referring too. The listed specs say nominal output DC Voltages are 14.4VDC for Boost Mode - 13.6VDC for Normal Mode - 13.2VDC for Float mode.

Can you change these settings to a different DC VOLTAGE output?

Good price for a convenient stand-alone mounting unit.
