For where I live, we frequently have power outages. I have a homedone simple system. I have two 12 volt marine batteries for my boats, that I bring in for the winter which I connect to an inverter which is on a circuit that only feeds my bedroom outlet (CPAP use overnight) and the outlet for my fridge and kitchen countertop.
I use a small 2000 watt generator to recharge the batteries daily and run lights.
After Michael we lost power for 5 days and got by fine that way. I did have to get water from the lake for flushing the toilet, but we live on the water so that wasn't hard.
No more than you are dealing with failures, I would keep it simple.
You have to cut off the main, for the safety of those outside, but you can do that, I had a house in Va.Beach years ago that the owner had a cord made that used a 240 volt outlet , he then used the dryer outlet, and he was able to feed the whole house from a 4000 watt genny including the well that way, but by code you should always install an automatic cutout.
