When you're thinking about power for your home during a power outage you should be thinking about the minimum amount of power you need to run the essentials rather than how much power you need to run everything in the house. The generator can only supply power when you feed it (gasoline, propane, etc.). How much you can store is limited and a new supply may not be readily available during the initial outage so you want to be able to stretch that stored supply as long as possible. For me the essential are refrigeration, A/C or heat, some lights and at least one outlet to power a microwave, coffee maker or other device short term. I've been able to get by with a 3,500 watt generator that's pretty stingy on gas.
