Hi ktmrfs,
The Grape 40 amp controller allows setting voltages and has provisions for temperature compensation. It would be my choice for systems up to 500 watts (or 600 for a flat install). It is also inexpensive and easily available. Built in bluetooth so you do the set up with a tablet or a phone. I think MrWizard is using one?
Why I want MPPT is because I wish to get the voltage up to about 120 or more vdc. The Magnum PT-100 can accept up to 187 volts, and 1650 watts for a 12 volt output. I'm beer budget so I don't wish to replace the inverter, though if I were starting over I'd do as 2oldman and go to 48 volts.

and your experience with PWM vs MPPT is similar to mine. PWM doesn't suffer much. However, to me the advantage of MPPT is most of them have way more options and setting to control the bulk, float, and equalizing voltages so I can set mine to exactly what Trojan recomends. as well as control on time etc. that many PWM controllers don't offer.
