MrWizard, yes wire size and distance are interchangeable.
YES.. i know the larger the wire, the further distance you can use between the controller and batteries
you missed the point of my post
the point being recommending the controller only be 18" from the battery
that location is just NOT available aka Feasible in most RV's
maybe in a 5th wheel with the batteries in the front storage and the solar controller on the other side of the wall
certainly NOT possible at all in my DP..NO WAY NO HOW
unless maybe i mounted it on the bedroom floor
thats not a suitable place for a Controller
As close as possible but not in the same compartment,
used to be the answer
which makes sense and covers every install, with the cravat use wire sized to minimize voltage drop
saying put it 18" .. just does not make sense
