I have to agree that having the panels on the ground and seeing the relationship between solar/battery/load makes much of what is said here understandable. One year of use and I understood what I wanted on the roof, what controller and how much battery to fill our needs in our situations. It will also be hard to let go of the ability to aim the panels for max power. That's addicting.
Since we are discussing portables, we need to discuss their down sides.
Portables are usually stowed away on the road or in storage, no charging going on there.
You do have to adjust them occasionally to get maximum results, they don't move if you are not there.
That brings up the next point, if they do move and you are not there...well lets just say things grow legs from time to time.
Since they are stored they may be in the way on a quick over night stop over. They wont do you any good either if you only have a short time and it's not worth setting it up.
I can see how wind can affect the smaller panels, it takes quite a bit to bother the big ones.
I haven't had the dogs get tangled but teaching the male to not lift his leg on them was a priority. ;)
