I started with 100 watts portable. In the summer it will be all you need.
Mount the controller near the batts if you can. Any kind of good 12v connector will suffice. Make sure the positive side from the trailer is shielded (female). You can fuse the line between controller and batts. If you can't buy a waterproof controller, put it in a vented box of some sort. Morningstar has some weatherproof controllers, I think.
Leave them out 24/7 except for any security concerns.
I used 12 gauge landscape wire for mine. Two fifty foot segments with a connection in between.
