Wanted to add to this thread, it's got good info. Have a question:
I currently have a Magnatec 6300 series (25 amp) converter in my camper. One battery, the batter is at the rear left side of a 9.5 foot camper. Quite a bit of wire to get back to the converter.
I plug in before I leave on a trip, never have shore power while camping. Recharge with a Champion 150 watt generator (I plan on a Honda 100w and solar next year).
I have a Intellipower PD4645 I pulled out of my old camper. Question is, when does it pull 45 amps? Besides the wire warming up possibly, would there be any problem not upgrading the wiring?
Thanks!
You need at least a "1000w" generator to run a 45 amp charger, preferably a "2000w" to be sure at altitude.
IMO the wiring for a 25 amp charger would not be fat enough for the 45 amper unless they overdid it. You need #8 AWG. Also the battery fuse on the pos wire near the pos battery post needs to be say a 50 amp instead of the maybe 30 amp one there now.
