Power Converter questions

I have a WFCO 35 amp converter its a WF-8835. I assume the unit is bad I have it pluged in to 120v and according to the volt meter there is 120 at the plug where the converter plugs into but when checking the power wires out of the unit there is about 2.3volts, and the fan is moving really slow. Battery is bad so I will be getting a new one tomorrow.

Questions
Is the converter bad?
Can I use the trailer without the converter if dry camping and use a battery charger and the generator to maintain the battery?

IT might be just a blown fuse or two but yes.. Sounds like the converter is bad.

IF you confirm it is bad replace only the electroincs with a progressive Dynamics 4600 series.. Smallest one in the series should do nicely.

Turn out the lights - the party's over...

Agree with smkettner on this. Why change brands?
  • Second update for the day
Converter has been pluged in for about 45 min, then everything stopped working. Now converter output is 11.9-12.2 volts, converter is really hot and I have not seen the little fan kick on.

  • Ok so here an update.
When bench tested converter seems to be working. Red(power wire) has 13.7volts when not connected to fuse circuit board but When connected its 1.1volts, BUT if I take the power wire off the screws on the circuit board and tap it a few times it will work and stay working but when I try to screw it back inplace it will not work. The circuit look fine (no burn marks).

    Is it a bad board

Those older converters where well known for boiling out the battery fluids over time and if left that way the battery shorts out and has to be replaced.

A good multi-voltage smart mode charger will go along way keeping your battery very happy... I would not replace the converter/charger unit with another WFCO unit. Smart mode type Progressive Dynamics and IOTA are popular converter/charger units.

Yes you can use a portable battery charger in its place but keep in mind the cheap battery chargers were not designed to be used in a continuous mode. The good converter/chargers also have great built-in DC REGULATION circuitry that mimics a battery very well.

I carry a Black and Decker VEC1093DBD 40AMP Smart Mode Charger for a back-up in my tool box...

Also keep in mind if your older trailer has electric brakes the trailer battery is also used for the required EMERGENCY BREAK AWAY setup for your trailer in the event the trailer becomes disconnected while being towed. This is a DOT SAFETY REGULATION thing. Not a good idea to travel with a dead trailer battery.

  • If you find the converter is in fact defunct, now would be a good time to upgrade it.
  • That is very low voltage.........BUT that is checking it with a bad battery still connected.

Disconnect battery cables then check converter DC output.
With 120V AC IN.....should have 13.2V DC OUT.
Voltage lower than 13.2V converter is bad.

YES you can use just battery power w/o converter and charge battery via a battery charger/generator.
Disconnect the 120V AC power source to converter (open circuit breaker/remove AC wire from CB if it is on a shared CB/unplug power cord if it uses one)

Mark battery cables prior to disconnecting them.....if connected backwards you will blow the 'reverse polarity' fuses on converter and will not get any power from battery to dc dist bars/panel---fuses

Also make sure new battery is fully charged PRIOR to connecting/using.
Otherwise you will damage that new battery right from the get go.
