power converter replacement

It appears my WFCO WF-8965 converter has bit the dust. The supply puts out 13.7vdc until a load is applied, then output voltage drops to 3vdc. This is with no battery in the circuit, only on 120vac shore power.

I have seen several negative comments regarding WFCO converters. It appears that the Power Dynamics converters are much better quality, slightly less expensive, and are a direct swap for the comparable WFCO unit.

Anyone have any experience with this conversion?
  • There are several options in fact. But first you have to decide if you want fast charging off-grid by generator and how many times a year will that be to make it worth while setting up for that especially.

If you are mostly only ever on shore power that's another thing entirely.

Note that PD, PowerMax, and Iota have pros and cons wrt performance and cost to make compromises from. You need to know your own situation/requirements to decide which unit has the best compromise factors for your money.

If you don't have a clue about that, just try to describe your "situation" and WE (the self-appointed experts who love to spend your money!) can explain why you should choose whichever converter is out there.

If all one is in need of accomplishing is simple conversion from 120v to 12v, wouldn't a simple psu work? (Just figure out max load draw and size accordingly). They come in both adjustable and fixed voltages.

    ~$60 for 40a, ~$110 for a 60a.

You also need a means of charging and regulating the battery, other than that, Yes. Most converters have 3 or 4 stages of charging from max to maintenance modes.

YOu have two options.. OEM and Progressive Dynaics 4600

Personally I would inspect and very likely fix the one you have (Can do that if you are near Darian, GA) but if you replace, go with the PDI 4600 This is one of the Wizard controlled units and .. I'm still looking for something that's better than the charge wizard. Have yet to find one.. Some as good, or very close, but non better.

  • It sounds bad. I replaced mine just as you state, and it only took 20 minutes to do it.
  • That is odd. The manual says to remove the load and if the converter puts out 13.7 v then the converter is good. You said there is no battery hooked up , It should work without a battery. So I have a new WFCO and it puts out 13.2V on low load and 13.7 with
higher load. I only add water every other month now instead of every month with the old one. Did you try it with a battery with good ground ?
