power disconnect switch???

This may seem like a silly question, but why do trailers have a power disconnect switch? My last trailer was a 2003 Bison living quarter horse trailer, and it did not have one. The 2006 that I have now has one. Why is one needed?

The manual for our '88 Mallard said not to leave it plugged for a long period of time on used because of the battery charger.
The manual for our '03 Itasca said it was alright to leave in plugged in all the time. Id did not have a smart charger but was better than the one in the '88.

  • I thought from want reasearch I have done on power converters, it is best to leave the trailer plugged in and charging all the time. To make up for battery drain. I would assume that if the disconnect is off the batteries are not charging.
  • Cut off switch disconnects the battery completely without having to unhook the battery. Some items, like the carbon menoxide detector are always "on", as is the circuit board in your converter, in today's campers continuously draw power from the battery, which over a short time (a few days), will drain the battery completely. When not in use, you might not want everything drawing on the battery. By flipping the switch, you know everything is "off".

Also, if you park your camper (say, at home), and you leave your camper unlocked, and your kids like to push buttons, they won't be able to turn anything on, nor will they be able to open, or close the slides.
  • Battery saver .. alarms and other items can deplete battery.
  • Because the parasitic loads of the circuit boards, alarms, and entertainment devices will drain batteries in short order.
