power problem

I just hadn't thought about it. It is now on my annual maintenance list.

One of the not exactly jokes I like to make is this: Many RVers have a few screws loose... And for the record those are the very screws I'm talking about.

When my rig was like a month or two old I had problems with the A/Cs.. sometimes the front one would work, sometimes the rear, sometimes both or neither.

One of the screws holding the wires to the branch circuit breaker took over TWO FULL TURNS before I begain to feel resistance,, Several of the other screws (All 3 colors) were loose as well. I re-tightened.. VERY TIGHT.

The photo shows exactly what happens with a loose connection.
I would suggest getting some electrical grease and going through all of your connections.
Disconnect one conductor at a time, apply electrical grease and re-install the conductors.

It's been very hot (100+) and I had the ac set at 95 on a 30 amp service. Think I over did it.

There are some DC self-resetting circuit breakers, used in circuits up to about 60 amps, where a temporary overload is somewhat expected (such as a battery charging circuit). But I also have never heard of a 120 volt or 240 volt circuit breaker that can re-set itself. That even sounds dangerous, while you are working on a system that it might come on by itself.

My guess also leans toward the generator transfer switch not transferring back to the shore power side. Normally the transfer switch is not powered on shore power, and energized with 120 volts about 30 seconds after the generator is started.

So try this. With the generator off for more than 1 minute, put a volt meter into a 120 volt outlet that is de-energized (or 120 volt radio or light bulb) and start the generator. If that light or radio comes on with the generator, it would indicate the transfer switch is stuck, and not going through the 30 second time delay.

A new transfer switch is about $200 for the 30 amp power cord version, or $300 - $400 for the 50 amp 3 pole version for a 50 amp coach. Installation extra, and you must be able to find it too! LOL

I learned today that my residential fridge and microwave breakers are on a separate panel for Inverter powered appliances. Looked frantically as fridge was off and the ice cream was thawing. This happened a few other times and the fridge came back on while I was looking for the breaker. This time, I found the breaker first, switched it off and back on. Never heard of a self resetting breaker before. The high tech stuff today may be getting to advanced for us less mechanically inclined folks.
