I have heard that the difference between a 3 year and 6 year warranty on a battery is 3/8" below the plates and 1/2" below the plates, so that once there is junk that falls off the plates that builds to 1/2" thick, the plates short out, and the battery life is over.
Planned to fail in a short time.
Johnson Controls makes many of the batteries today, and under many brands. Several designs, and several life spans are designed to each one.
I think that Exide and Trojan make the other batteries, with only a few made by other manufactures.
