pro 16 slider hitch

I have a pro 16 slider hitch and having a hard time
getting it to slide. The bar to get it to slide when
hooked up to 5th wheel will not move to maneuver.
when unhooked will work ok. How level does the trailer
have to be. Are there any tricks to getting this to work.

    slowly pull forward when engaging either way. The bang of stopping will scare you.

    Manual says to lift weight of trailer up with front jacks first. VERY inconvenient but works.

    When we first got our trailer we were practicing in a parking lot and it worked fine.
    Got it home and figured let's try backing it in with it and see how it does. Nope wouldn't work once on the rough/ grass/ dirt.
    Trailer was pretty level.
    Since then we have never used it again. Haven't needed too.

    Our friend said he has had the same issue.

    Once on a hard packed surface seems to work.
    Sorry no advice on how to make it work, been over two years and never needed it.
