Progressive Surge Guard Recommendation

we're taking delivery of a 2016 Itasca Suncruiser later this summer and we want to install a hard-wired 50-amp Progressive Surge Guard.

Can someone please explain the functional difference between Progressive models EMS-LCHW50 and EMS-HW50C? Is there a different model I should take a look at?

Do I need the sold separately digital display model 'EMS-Remote Display Switch' or do either of the surge guard models come with a remote display? I'd like to have a remote display installed at a convenient place in the MH's cabin.

neither of our previously owned coaches had a surge guard. advice and recommendations appreciated.

Thanks.

  • And here's a tip: mount the remote display someplace where you can't see it.

The entire time power is connected, the display flashes red codes for voltage, frequency, current, and status. The display cannot be dimmed or turned off, giving your camper an emergency-room ambience while you're trying to sleep at night.

I don't need to know that stuff all the time, so my display is mounted in an outside storage compartment near my electrical connection.
  • My SG doesn't have a remote read out meter and I never saw the real need for it. I would definitely want a bypass switch on one however.

  • The HW50C has a remote and bypass switch on the remote, other wise I'm not aware of any differences.

I'm preferring a hard wired unit vs the portable? good idea?

Good idea. Not only cheaper, and it won't walk away in the middle of the night.

I installed the hard wired with display in the Spring of 2014 after getting zapped with 240V at a newly installed pedestal. Since then it has diagnosed power problems twice.

hadn't considered the theft angle...we've only had one theft since 1986 and that was when we were away from the campsite. I was thinking more like it's one less thing to do when setting up or breaking camp.

As Learjet says the EMS-LCHW50 has a readout on the basic unit in the electrical bay and the EMS-HW50C has a remote readout you can mount within the motorhome. The remote readout is very handy in that you can monitor the voltage, Amps, Hz and any past or current error codes that occur at a glance.

and the remote display and lack thereof is the basic difference between the two units? no other functional difference? I've heard and read that the PD units are the best/preferred surge guards...true? I'm preferring a hard wired unit vs the portable? good idea?
