Um, yes, you do.
When you disconnect the line from the valve on the tank, there is that little open hole there. Propane puffs out, replaced by a slug of air. When you connect the line back to the filled tank, you trap that slug of air in the line.
Happens to me every time I change tanks. There's always a bit of air to purge which causes a brief lapse in flame quality.
It's not rocket science.
