Propane leak!!!

Just as I'm finishing packing to drive to FLA I opened the main valve on my permanently mounted propane tank to check the furnace. Gas started coming out of the valve handle! That never happened before. It is 10 here right now @ 7:30 am. I will need the furnace overnight the next 2 nights so I need to make sure I'll be OK. Too early for anybody to be open. I will call around at 8am to see if anyone can check this quickly.

ANy suggestions?

    Ten,

I do have a small ceramic heater, but usually do not stop at FHU while driving. Plus I would not be able to run the fridge on gas or use the stove.

For me, some inconvenience and expense is well worth it to get to Florida and out of 10-degree weather! :D
  • I just got back from General RV. They agreed the tank needs emptied & the valve changed. THEN they said they could not empty the tank. I asked before I drove the 30 miles if they could. All they said we need to see it first. At least they didn't charge me. What a waste of time & fuel.

I'm calling the other place next.

If you can access the propane line where it goes on the tank you can get a 20lb tank, go to Menards, Walmart or somewhere like that. Get a hose and adapters to by-pass your onboard tank and get by for a few nights until you can get the tank re valued.

    Exactly the right move.

  • Purchase 2 small electrical heaters for $20 -$30 and overnight where you have FHU.
  • Chris,

I've had this rv for 18 years. When I've opened the valve every other time I opened it all the way then turned it 1/8 turn back. Never had a leak or smell. I'm guessing what happened was in this 10 degrees that when I opened it that whatever kind of inner seal it has must have cracked or something. I did try it all the way open & while I didn't hear a hiss I did have a smell. I do not feel safe using this and will try calling some rv shops when they open in 15 minutes.

It is an ASME tank mounted horizontally under the side of my Class B.
  • Try what Doug said- usually they are "back seating" and will seal at full open.
  • Thanks Doug. I just called a propane shop & they could look at it but not fix it until next week. AN RV shop will probably say the same thing. Looks like I'll not be leaving for FLA today.
  • OK, the most common cause of this is the nylon seal has a small crack which will require a NEW valve. ALL LP tanks you always open all the way to snug for use and obviously TIGHT when you shut it off. I am not condoning what I state now. Can you open the valve all the way and get it snug and the leak stops? Sometimes they will. If NOT, you need to close the valve and take to a LP dealer and have them drain the tank and replace the valve. You need to have this done regardless if the first suggestion works for this trip. Doug
