I've always left both tanks open, unless storing for a prolonged time. I too have the auto switchover valve between them. I just occasionally check the indicator on it, and if red, the tank to which the lever is pointing is the empty one. I switch the lever to the other tank, and know that its time to get the other tank refilled.
