Propane cylinder OPD service valve has a 'spring loaded shut off valve' that will not allow flow out of propane cylinder unless a pigtail hose is properly attached (stub inside ACME Nut opens the shut off valve in OPD valve)
Excess flow device is a spring loaded ball bearing check valve inside ACME Nut.
It moves to closed position when you first open OPD Service Valve and then spring moves it back to center position when downstream pressure equalizes.
Thermal Bushing in ACME Nut melts above 240*F and then OPD Spring loaded valve pushes it inward shutting off flow from cylinder
