Propane Regulator - BBQ style

I have no idea if the click I hear is a safety mechanism, I just know that my Pup wouldn't run on that tank and ran fine on another. After disconnecting it, I hooked it up to the grill and it ran the grill fine (still is).

OPD float is to help prevent overfilling. The valve's threaded (in/out) connector has a spring load device that if nothing is connected or something is connected improperly stops flow. The flow limiter spring and ball is in the ACME nut (QCC-1) connector.

I have one that does exactly the same thing. Works fine with the grill, but won't work with the Pup at all. It doesn't matter how slowly I open the valve, I can hear the safety click in the tank valve. When I have it hooked to the grill, it doesn't matter how fast I open it, it works fine.

Seems like I hear that click when opening the valve all the time on all tanks that work or not on RV, but can't say for sure. Is that the safety something closing in the tank? I thought only safety shut-off in the tank was the level dongle thing (if it is tipped sideways will turn off).

Most of my tanks now are ones that get traded off at the stores (not always convenient to get em filled) so although this tank came off old camper where everything worked, I cant say for sure that I ever used this tank as it was paired with another…

Now that it all works I left tank open a couple of days and got a heavy propane smell in camper. I guess the propane alarm does not work.

Put old (full) tank on bbq grill and it worked fine.

A common error is for someone to open the valve too quick and activate the flow restrictor.

The reason for two stage is better control of pressure. On a BBQ fluctuations in pressure are unimportant.

According to the engineers at Manchester Tank, some of the 20 or 30 lb tank OPD valves used on these tanks have a built in flow limiter and others do not. There is no requirement to have or not to have the flow limiter in it, just some do and some don't. When I first tried to run my coach heating systems on a 20# tank, the heaters would shut down due to the flow limiter. They recommended a tank valve with the legend "ITALY" cast into the valve body. This is way up high on the valve body right under the 3 lobed handle. I found the tanks I needed at LOWES and bought 3. We've been using these for a number of years and haven't had a heater shut down since.

I found the issue, but decided to replace the 15 yr old reg anyway as it is time.
I didnt get a lot out of this thread…. I was looking for answers and explanations as to the actual reasons to use one over the other not so much a list of rules that really don't explain or offer reasons for their basis.
No one is questioning that these rules are wrong so not sure why some are offended.

Safety regulations are useless info? You are choosing to ignore advice from two guys who have decades of real world experience as RV techs, who are telling you this is not a good idea.
