Propane Regulator?

I have a manual switch over regulator on my 5th wheel. I noticed if it's switched to door side tank, it will actually feed from both tanks. If it's switched to the non-door side tank it will only feed from that tank. I'm assuming this is not normal and is just a bad regulator. I don't see an option of running both tanks, the lever either flips all to left or all to the right.

  • I do mine different. Mine is an automatic one that feeds both thanks, yada, yada, yada....

But I only open one tank at a time, and close the valve on the other. I REALLY do not mind getting up at 3:00 am to switch over the tanks if one goes empty. That's better than not paying any attention at all, and running both empty at 3:00 am in the morning! And the colder the weather gets, the more often tanks need refilled. When one goes empty, I know it's empty! Switch over, and get the empty refilled first chance available! Like, right away!

I ran out of both tanks only 1 times with my first trailer that had 2 tanks. NEVER again!

Not getting this at all :( (I assume both tank valves are open of course.)

How do you know it feeds from the non-door side tank also as stated?

When the door side tank is empty, the indicator goes red, and gas comes from non-door side, but the lever stays pointed at the door side.

If you switch the lever over to the non-door side when the door side is still green, the indicator will stay green and now it sucks from the non-door side tank and not from the door side one. Why is it a problem when it doesn't and how can you tell it doesn't anyway?
  • The 'lever' swaps porting for red/green indicator

First cylinder service valve opened determines 'primary' tank regardless of which cylinder the lever is pointing at.

Manual or Automatic......only one tank at a time should be 'in service' (being drawn from)
If both are in service at same time.....porting is hanging up---regulator is faulty
  • I think you have an automatic regulator that is malfunctioning on one side. They all have a lever or knob to switch the primary tank.

When the indicator shows red the primary tank is empty, should be refilled and the lever moved to the other side. Repeat to infinity and the only way to run out is failure to check the indicator.

If you have a choice I recommend Cavagna brand regulator (amazon)
Get new pigtails while you are sorting this out.
  • Correct. should only let out propane from tank where flipped regulator is pointing toward. replace with an auto switch regulator. You still have to manually flip the lever when the site glass shows red but better than having to get up at 3am out of propane. with the auto switch you leave both tank valves open but need to monitor them daily so you don't end up with both tanks empty at 3am
