propane shut off valve

I'm looking for an automatic shut off when there is a massive release of pressure, like in a severed line/car accident. Any suggestions other than avoiding an accident completely :)

And what Tatest said... My understanding is that is the code, ALL fixed tanks, at lest all "Modern" (read that this century and a good portion of last) tanks will have that feature.
  • If Gulfstream was using Manchester ASME RV tanks in 2003, the excess flow valve was built into the vapor outlet valve. That takes care of you even if the regulator is knocked off in an accident.
  • Called an excess flow valve, and yes, they are built in to LP pigtails and acme fittings. There are different capacities- ones you can buy for LP grills have a max flow of ~ 70k btu/hr. RV models are higher, with high capacity models now available.
You can buy stand alone valves though, as well.
  • If you're talking about a 20lb tank, it already has a built in automatic shut off feature. In fact ask those that have turned their tanks on too fast and had it trip and shut off flow. All that is needed to reset it is to shut off the tank wait a few minutes and then reopen it slowly.
