Propane tanks will not fill

I recently took my 20 pound tanks to be filled and the gas would not fill into the tanks. ( I tried two different gas vendors)Do I need to get new tanks? Can the tanks be repaired? Can I do it myself? My tanks are less than 3 years old.

Yes, stick someone else with the problem. Why should you pay when you can dump the problem on others.

Oh for Pete sake! That's the business they're in. You bring us your old empty tank and give us money and will let you have this nice fully functional full one. It's a trade in business. Blue Rhino's own website tells you that "exchanging a tank is a recycling process that keeps old tanks out of landfills". They tell you to "bring ANY tank and exchange it for a freshly painted Blue Rhino tank."

  • Did the venders say why they couldn't fill those tanks? Did they have the correct fittings?
My guess, is that the safety valve in the valve assy is malfunctioning (or maybe functioning fine, because there is a defect)

DO NOT try and make this repair yourself, unless you want to have a shortened life! LP isn't really something that should be messed with....especially, if you don't really know what you're doing.

What I would do, is to "Swap" the tanks at one of those places like Home Depot, or Walmart, and just get new bottles......you can then have those refilled when you need to, without having to swap them again.
  • When I was dispensing propane I would see this problem sometimes, caused by a stuck valve. I would bounce the tank a few times on the protective collars and that usually fixed the problem.
