Propane vs Gasoline

So I've always wondered why some of my friends on the boards here have such disdain for propane. I mean, I get it if you have a massive solar array and want to run your fridge with electricity, but...

See, I have a client who is selling a home with tons of off-grid capabilities. He has 2-500 gal propane tanks, but with a caveat. The local companies want a small fortune to deliver propane. So along with each, big, full tank, he has a pair of 10 gal tanks plumbed alongside. To save pennies, he keeps the big tanks full and runs the empty of the two 10 gallon tanks to town for a refill.

For my own purposes, I just crunched a few numbers. As it turns out, propane provides about 92,500 BTU/gal, while gasoline 125,000. But in my town, at least... gasoline costs about $3.50 a gallon presently, while propane only $2.20.

This means that propane provides about 74% of the energy, but costs only 63% of gasoline.

I get it that it's not always easy to find propane, but for full-timers who remain parked for extended periods, it seems more economical to run the toad into town and fill a few 10 gal bottles on occasion than 4 Jerry Cans of gasoline for the genny.

Now help me learn something.

  • Within 1 mile of my house there are 3 gas stations. There are 0 propane stations. The closest place I can fill up my propane tanks is 8 miles away (in which there are 13+ gas stations); the next one 15 miles away. The gas stations are mostly 24/7. The propane stations, not so much; 8-6, Monday through Saturday. It isn't that we distain propane, it's that it isn't widely available or convenient.
  • A 5 gallon propane tank is a lot heavier than a 5 gallon gas can, and the gas can is many times made of plastic, so only a few dollars and less than a pound weight.

Many motorhomes draw their gas from the main tank - 55 to 75 gallons, so refilling is very infrequent if they are staying put for a summer - like in a National park while hosting a campsite.

Contrary to most beliefs, farmers do get home delivery of gasoline - just like a propane tank can be refilled. You can also have gas and diesel delivered to your home or home away from home. Many businesses have fueling trucks come to the construction sites to refill both gas and diesel equipment, as well as propane powered construction equipment.

When was the last time you saw a farm tractor at the local gas station? I guess it could happen, but most fuel at home, and do not pay road tax oon the fuel used in generators or off road equipment.

    Fred.
