Hi jrnymn,
The alternator "looks" at the starter battery. The solar "looks" at the house battery. Once the starter battery is full, the alternator will reduce voltage and amps of charging. At that point my solar tends to send a few amps to the chassis.
There are ways around having this happen. One is an extra alternator that is dedicated to the house bank. Another is an external regulator (diode) that is hooked up to the house bank. This can be placed away from the heat of the engine.
