The Xantrex can be a solar controller, a load controller or a wind turbine charge controller
But it can only be configured to be one of there's things
Configured as a charge controller there is no connected load
There are four lugs to be used for source input and battery charge
Or battery input and load output
No auxiliary dump like some shunt controllers
I THINK this discussion is because the controller You were using is built similar to the cheap controller I just removed
Panel positive and battery positive and load positive are common
Check one with an ohm meter
So if you ground your meter to a common ground ..Panel..and load terminal will ALL read the same voltage
The controller works because the panel negative is isolated, and output negative goes to the battery
I wonder what voltages differences you would read between if you disconnect the battery from ground and read only between the pairs input pair and output pair no common ground
