Well Bill nailed it, very poor access to the wiring strip. The wires are right beside each other and waiting until dark this time of year is no problem. Got the batteries out, and the tray out too. Likely first time in five years this has ever happened.

500 watts parallel at 12v is easy. Series approaching 90+ volts is dangerous.
DC rated switch is best to disconnect panels from controller before you service the batteries.

It might be wise to get a DC-rated switch, one that is rated for the amps, and ideally, a DPST switch or two switches for each terminal. That way, you can completely disconnect the solar panels from the CC.

If you have poor access to controller for getting at wires you can just put a blanket or mats over the panels on the roof to kill charging during daytime.

For connecting up again, another reason to follow that sequence is to let the controller see what the system voltage is (12, 24, etc) before connecting the panels.

I said four wires because in an RV you would not be using the load terminals. The loads are already on the DC panel or battery direct, so the solar just charges the battery.

There is no need to wait until dark. Reconnect the battery bank, and then connect the panels.

In your shoes I would add a Direct Current rated switch.

Thanks guys, one lead to the solar panel is now disconnected as suggested. I will wait until dark to reconnect tonight.

No switch preinstalled? That’s shabby.
