A 1000 watt inverter might not be enough inverter to handle the start up surge of the residential dorm fridge.
My 12vdc compressor fridge with a danfoss/secop bd35f is about 32 watts running at 2000 rpm, and the biggest surge recorded on startup was 56 watts. I use one of these designed to measure start up surges of DC electric motors on Radio controlled toys:

i cannot attest to the funcion of this Kill a watt competitor, but it is reported to measure start up surge wattage.
