Do what you feel comfortable with. I encourage everyone else to do the same. I’ve been doing this for 15 years, sometimes a couple of times per year, and never a problem. I’m satisfied that I know the science well enough to realize that I am not creating an overpressure hazard for my water system.
There are lots of people who believe that the only sure way to prevent pipes from freezing is to displace the water using pink antifreeze and that blowing air through the pipes is inherently high risk. I understand that the point is to displace the water with anything that won’t expand upon freezing and that air works perfectly well, and I prefer to avoid the trouble of flushing the pink stuff out of my water system when I want to use it again.
BTW, plumbing codes limit residential water pressure to 80 PSI, not 50 – 60 PSI, and at room temperature pex is much stronger than that.
