Can you describe the non-direct solar orientation? If you don't get the sun shining on them, you're not going to get much harvest. I have probably one of the more forgiving setups, a 235W polycrystalline module and an MPPT controller. I can get some power even with indirect sun but it is meager.
Beemerphile has the best solution, possible use of a rack, placed in the sun. Heck, you could even hang them in a tree as long as there is good sun.
If your budget allows, get as much panel as is feasible, would be my suggestion. It's strange how many more uses or additional use can be wanted after starting with solar. ;)
Good luck with the solar, it is a great way to keep batteries charged and is minimal to operate.
