Quick Test of Eco-Worthy MPPT Controller

Ordered it on 3 Oct arrived at the door 23 Oct free shipping.

Controller rated to 42V so watch that. EG I have it on one 230w panel, Voc 37v at 25C, so would be more Voc at cold temps.

Not able to do proper testing with Trimetric to measure, but rigged up a yard test to see if the thing worked at all :)

Used one full SOC 12v battery with a 400w inverter clamped on and two 100w lamps for an estimated 20a draw. Got battery to 12.5v connected controller and 230w panel (Voc 36.8, Vmp 30 , Isc, 8.34, Imp 7.67 )

The displayed voltage was confirmed with another voltmeter. Before starting, checked disconnected panel aimed at sun, got:

34.7Voc and 8.06 Isc. (Rated 36.8 and 8.34) so expected less than max amps.

Best amps on controller when aiming panel was 14.99a Didn't note battery voltage

Lost the window--sun behind trees. It works (assuming its amps read-out is to be believed) and might even get my hoped for 16 to 17 amps on a better day. So far so good. Be a while before I can do any real testing and comparisons with PWM.

Just wanted to report the controller seems ok as was posted by JiminDenver. Jim, thanks for the good steer to this controller for $102

I ordered one yesterday. I'm confident that it will work great with my 250 watt, 24 volt panel.

It says it will handle 600w at 24v but 300 at 12v. the trouble is that 42v limit which is less than those watts limits suggest. I see the Voc on the Hanwha 250w panel is 38v instead of the 37 for the 230w I have. Sharp's 250w is 38.3v.

Getting close to 42v, but I think the 250 should work ok down to reasonable temps. It is panel temp too, not ambient.

JiminDenver camps on top of Pike's Peak or someplace weird at 10,000 ft above the clouds at 32F, so he is rightly twitchy about going over his 230.

Probably the warning means more to those who have several 12v panels in series
  • Yes, I have that. They sent a 7 page booklet with mine that has the web version. I also watch that video you linked in your thread (which I linked above) to see how the buttons work. Eventually I will get it figured out.

12G's irr calculator says we had 816 today instead of the 1000 for the ratings, so the lower figures I got at noon make sense in general. The actual IV curves suggest Isc for my panel at 816 would be 6.9a vice 8.34 at 1000 but I got 8.06, so that didn't come out right. Of course you have new panel, maybe a temp effect, whatever.

Means it is the same thing as always: "Just a guide for estimating, and you must get the actuals in real life."

  • Go to the website and download the manual, it is much easier to read than the sheet they send you.
  • Drat, I missed the power output reading. I am not familiar with the instructions yet for the buttons and display, just enough to get it going and see if it even worked.
  • Whew, I am glad it works so far. I always worry when I recommend something new.

14.99 amps that late in the day, sweet! I'll be very interested in a direct 230w comparison between our panels. My peak so far has been 16.25a and 212w but that could have just been how much the 200w coffee pot used and not the real peak.

I have a idea for a heat sink for mounting if you are interested.
