RAM 2012 air cond. question???

Bought a new 2012 ram truck in 2012 and never had a problem with the A/C... Monday the A/C stopped blowing cold air so I took it to my Ram dealer to get checked out.... he stated that the freon was down to about 65lbs and that they put a dye in it but found no leaks. He said that the A/C unit just does lose a little freon over the years little by little...refilled it and is fine now....... Is that normal that the A/C units do lose a little freon over the years??? I just thought that it was a sealed system and should not lose anything unless a leak..
Any thoughts on losing freon over the years and is it normal?
thanks

  • The older Ram trucks had issues with the condenser leaking. Since it was inside the dash, literally, it was not easy to find the leak with dye. We had ours checked twice and they could find no leak, even after they checked the condenser. But we took it to another guy, and he found the leak, it was indeed the condenser, and replaced it.

IMO there should be no leakdown in just 6 years. They should stay sealed longer than that. It certainly is possible, but I would find another mechanic to check it out before I accepted it as fact.

IN a fully sealed system like a Refrigerator or home A/C the compressor is electric. it is possible to seal the casing around the motor/compressor so leaks basically do not happen.

But in a Engine driven A/C the compressor has a shaft. WIth a seal that breaks down over time.
  • Yes, they are NOT sealed system when they have multiple seals and O rings on the system. Just like tires, a Automotive AC system can lose very small amounts of coolant over the years. IF your problem came up after 6 years, I would not worry about it. BUT, if it comes back once or twice a year, then find and fix the leak. Doug
  • My 2012 RAM suddenly lost the air conditioning one day. Went to work in the morning air nice and cold, came out in the afternoon and no air. Bought a can of the refill with gauge and it would not take it, showed over charge. A couple days later after I got a gauge set it showed the same pressure on high side as low side. Opened the valve to see if there was any Freon in the system and no pressure in the system. Ended up being the compressor had a leak. I replaced the compressor, vacuumed down the system, and fill it with Freon and is working fine now.

Any vehicle can leak down after a couple years, just like your home A/C it needs checked every so often.
  • It's a tiny, tiny leak. Yes, most vehicles lose refrigerant over the years as they age a tiny bit at a time.
