If you are somewhere that you have electricity available set your furnace down to 50 or so, during the times your up, use the fireplace you mentioned, at night supplement the bedroom area with an electric space heater, (I prefer oil filled for safety) At the lower setting your furnace wont run that often but should still keep your tanks from freezing, and while space heaters cant usually keep up on cold days or nights, they are great supplements to the main furnace to keep you comfortable.
