Rattle can Camo job on Honda EU2000i.

A few weeks ago I bought a well used Honda EU2000i on Craigslist for cheap as a back-up to the one I already have. It had paint all over it, tons of dirt inside and out, and a bunch of rash and dings on outside, but ran good. I’m by no means a Bug-out guy, just use the generators for RV camping, rarely have power outages here.

While searching for new foam intake filters, I saw the special edition Camo EU2000i and thought they were pretty neat. Talked to a local dealer, and the standard (red) fairing parts sounded pretty expensive so figured the Camo one would be more. I ran into a few forum threads and youtube vids on camo Krylon rattle can jobs mostly on guns. I never had the urge to spray paint my guns but a well used EU2000i? Why not, it’s already ugly.

Went to my local Walmart, and bought three cans of the Rustoleum Camo stuff (desert tan, OD green, and brown), I would of bought Krylon but didn’t carry it. I also bought a mesh zipper bag for washing lingerie there (97 cents). Was useless as a lingerie bag, could only fit three boxers in it.

Taking the fairing off the EU2000i was pretty simple other than having a stripped screw I had to drill out of the handle. Two long 10mm bolts on bottom and the rest Phillips screws. I used a razor to take off all the decals which I tossed since they were beat to hell. Washed with dish soap and water to get off dirt and then wiped down with paint thinner to get off old adhesive and oils. Used Qtips to get the tight a areas.

I started with the tan paint as a base. I wasn’t too sure about the brown paint I bought so I traded it for a High Temp BBQ flat black spray can I found in the garage. Then put the mesh down and sprayed the black followed by the green. Took off the mesh and thought the marks from the black were a little strong for my taste. Went back over with just a random dusting with the green and tan to soften it up.

One thing I regret was attempting to sand the rash and dings out with 200 grit paper and kind of half bottomed it. I should of went over it again with something finer or just left it alone. When the paint went down on those areas it looked uneven. Ultimately it didn’t matter because uneven and inconsistent is what you want in Camo. Also I painted in about 100 degree heat. I think some of the paint dried before it hit the plastic. I think this is why I have a very rough texture after the paint dried. Sand paper like texture. I topped off the paint with a clear matte Krylon for some added protection.

Overall I am pleased with the outcome as this was my first attempt at a camo paint job. Now thinking of painting my other EU2000i to match. Or maybe more of a forest camo for when I’m in the mountains. This one can be my coast/beach unit.

Sorry I get anxious with projects and forget to take picture in the beginning.

  • Great job. I think camo paint is a good way to fix a messed up unit, but I wouldn't do it to a nice one.
  • Darn nice job. I'm not a big fan of camouflage (perhaps I had enough of it in the Army) but the little Honda looks very good in its fatigues.
I found that the red Hondas can get a fresh look with just a coat of wax. They really fade the rich red color fast. When I wax mine, it looks brand new again.
  • I like the Hyundai sticker suggestion. Then I would have a 10 year warranty @ 100k hours!

Maybe some Hyundai stickers would help as well. haha

I used to leave a 8 track on my dash back when cassettes became popular, then when cd's became popular I would leave cassettes up there. Never had a break in.

Thanks for the good idea, think I will go with the camo as well.
  • Nice work! I would suggest you get some Goof-off (or other paint remover) and clean up the end shields. Follow that with a vinyl cleaner like Meguiars and it should be shining like a new penny.

Why didn't you paint the black part?? What you painted looks good, just unfinished...

Yea I though about it. But thought I would just copy Honda's Camo edition. Plus I ran out of tan paint. Ha!
