The receiver actually draws the same amount of power in either mode - making it a large parasitic load when in "Standby."
The receiver is ALWAYS comparing the Guide or programming schedule to your list of scheduled recordings and starting and stopping active recording or tuning as scheduled.
Well the wally receivers I have have a on off button. In fact after I realized that the main receiver didn't have to be on to watch the other receiver in the bedroom I unplugged my main receiver and T.V.
I always did before satellite because we're running off of solar.
